WHITE
WHITE
White…The color of purity, innocence, wholeness and competition. The color white is color at its most complete and pure, the color of perfection.
In color psychology white is the color of new beginnings, of wiping the slate clean, so to speak. It is the blank canvas waiting to be written upon. While white isn't stimulating to the senses, it opens the way for the creation of anything the mind can conceive. Here are a few facts about the color white:
White light comes from all colors combined.
Snow isn’t actually white. “White as snow” is a common comparison because snow is often seen as one of the purest examples of white in nature. However, snow technically isn’t white at all. In reality, snow is made up of countless translucent ice crystals. It appears white to us because when light hits snow, it scatters among the ice crystals, causing us to see all wavelengths of light at once, which we perceive as white.
While white light can be made by combining other colors of light, paint and other physical art mediums work the opposite way. When you mix the primary colors of paint together, they get darker.
There are many instances throughout history where everyday items were later discovered to contain hazardous materials. One of those was white lead, which was used in paint and cosmetics. During the 18th century, people were directly putting products containing white lead on their faces as a fashion statement.
When animals have bright white fur, it’s usually to help them blend into snow. However, that means they only need a white coat in the winter. Some mammals change colors from white to brown as the weather gets warmer, so they can still camouflage even when the ground is covered in dirt instead of snow.
Symbolism of WHITE in Different Religions and Cultures
In Western art history, the white marble sculpture reigns supreme. Our Western veneration for the white classical sculpture comes from antiquity and the rediscovery of ancient Greek and Roman ideas during the Renaissance. To emulate the achievements of the past, artists and architects studied the giant statues and the ancient texts of Vitruvius, employing the classical orders of columns, monumental proportions, and modularity. Importantly, the colour white was important in this period of rediscovery. By the time the rest of Europe picked up the style of the Renaissance, white was the colour to emulate.
Throughout history, marble has been heralded as one of the most beautiful materials for its partial translucency. Italian bright white Carrara marble in particular was a favorite of Michelangelo, who miraculously carved David from flawed marble. Ivory has also long been associated with spiritual meaning. Alongside its rarity and expense, its extraordinary workability has produced numerous intricate objects throughout the world.
The enduring love for Chinese porcelain, and its famous white and blue designs, held a religious component in the Mongol-ruled Yung dynasty, where the blue represented the blue wolf ancestry and white the fallow doe.
